Established 2016
The Consignment program is currently on hold. With everything going on related to COVID-19, we've had to pivot fairly quickly and start operating on a totally different business model. This new model doesn't give us a lot of time to do the extra things, like the Consignment Program, which require a significant amount of time to operate properly. Thank you for your understanding and please be patient with us as we adjust to these changes.

Southern Author Consignment Program

Picture

This program is for authors based in the South who live outside of North Carolina.

Congratulations on completing your book! Writing and publishing a book is a difficult undertaking and you've made it to the point that you're looking for a home for your baby. We're here to help with that! Foggy Pine Books believes that supporting independent authors is an important part of being an independent bookstore. That's why we created the consignment program. Getting published traditionally isn't always possible or desirable. Our program allows you to get your book on our shelves, get paid when it sells, and get your name out into the community. It also allows us to create lasting and positive relationships with authors in our local community, our state, and across the South.

If you are interested in our program please read the program details in full, fill out the application, and submit it.
*We will not accept books for consideration without filling out the application and receiving a request in advance--please do not send us your book unless your application has been accepted and you've been asked to do so. We reserve the right to handle any books sent without our request, in any manner we feel appropriate.*

How does the program work?

1. Read the program details IN FULL.

2. Double check that your book meets all our guidelines.

3. Fill out and submit the application: Please allow us 2-4 weeks to process it before checking on the status.

4. Receive a follow up email: This email will inform you whether or not we are interested in reviewing your book. If we are interested, we will ask you to drop off a review copy. Do not bring/send us your book to review unless we have requested it.
5. Upon your acceptance to the program, we will direct you to the payment of the one-time program fee of $35 and ask you to return the contract we have drawn up to outline the author's & our responsibilities.

6. Drop off or mail in copies of your book.

7. Feature us on your social media & webpage so your readers know they can purchase your book at Foggy Pine Books. Tell everyone you know!

8. Check in anytime to find out the status of your book sales!
NOTE: Please do not call the store regarding the consignment program. Email us at: consignment@foggypinebooks.com
* Bookseller is not responsible for damaged or stolen goods.

Who should apply to this program?

Authors who live outside of North Carolina and are based in the South. Excluding our state, we consider the South to be: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

We are particularly interested in books about a Southern experience, fiction & nonfiction, and are always looking out for titles like that.

What if I'm a small press?

If you are a small press wanting your books to be stocked here AND they are available from Ingram, please email bookseller@foggypinebooks.com to make a request.

We are not currently taking titles from small presses on consignment, unless the available discount on Ingram is less than our regular discount.

How many spaces are available in the program?

Our focus is on local authors but we don't want to miss out on great opportunities from authors in other states.

We have a total of 5 spots available in our consignment program for Southern authors. This is what our small staff can reasonably keep track of at one time, in addition to the consignment accounts for local authors, while also giving each author our best.

What happens after I submit my application?

Your application will be reviewed by our staff to determine if your book will be a good fit for our store. If you are approved, you will be asked to send a hard copy* of your book to the store to be reviewed. We then check to make sure it meets our standards. If your book passes muster, you will be directed to a payment form and we will move forward with stocking your book. The program fee is $35 per author. If you have multiple books for us to consider, you must submit an application for each book. However, if your books are accepted, you will only pay the program fee once. If you have any questions about the program before or after you fill out the application, please email: consignment@foggypinebooks.com.

*NOTE: The book you bring to the store for approval will not be returned to you. We often make notes inside the book and we keep it with the consignment record for record-keeping purposes.

What do you look for in a book?

From a very basic standpoint, books must meet binding/printing standards: book title & author name on spine, quality binding (no spiral bound or staples), must have been proofed, have a scannable UPC code and an ISBN, and is not published by an Amazon-owned or affiliated company. Decisions are made on a book-by-book basis and are final. We are particularly interested in books about Southern experiences but are open to books in almost any genre. We are not taking any parenting, art instruction, or coffee table books.

How long will you stock my book & how many do you need?

Author will provide 5 books, initially, to the bookseller and covers all shipping costs, if the book has to be shipped to us.  Books accepted into the program will remain on our shelves for 90 days, in the section of our choosing.

How do I get paid?

Foggy Pine Books will pay 60% of retail price, according to industry standard. Each January and July, the bookseller is responsible for sending the author payment by their preferred method for any books that have been sold.

Why is there a program fee?

The consignment program is very labor intensive. We set up paper records, track sales, and manage inventory--all of which has to be done by hand for each individual title in the program. Your book occupies limited and valuable space on our shelves. We want authors to understand that just stocking your book incurs expenses for us, whether or not it sells. This is why we have the non-refundable program fee of $35 that must be paid before we will make your book available in our store.

How will I know how my book is selling?

The Bookseller may contact the author to restock during the consignment period. Author is responsible for shipping all re-stock and can request an update on how their book is doing at any time. Updates will not be provided, except with payment for books sold. The Author is also responsible for contacting us to update contact info.

What will the bookstore do to promote my book?

We will display your book in appropriate sections and add it to displays featuring local authors. The author is expected to promote the book on their social media and website. Foggy Pine Books will share posts we are tagged in by the author, however, they must not contain any reference to Amazon. If it does, we will not share the post.

How can I renew my consignment contract?

When the consignment period is over, it is at the discretion of the bookseller to renew the contract. If the contract will not be renewed, the bookseller will return the remaining books (shipping costs covered by author) and write a check for books sold in the time period since the last payment. If the contract is renewed OR an author wants to add another book to their consignment account, no more fees are required to be paid. If the remaining books are not picked up within 60 days, we reserve the right to donate the book(s) to a charity/organization of our choice.
