So, what's the book about?
After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She's not sure what she will find--her cousin's husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.
Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She's a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she's also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin's new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi's dreams with visions of blood and doom. Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family's youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family's past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family's once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness. And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

The Hatchet Coffee book club has been so much fun this summer! We're really looking forward to Fall though and have some really great things planned for the October meeting. The September meeting, however, will be held as usual with the exception of offering hot apple cider with rum, instead of wine. The book we're reading and discussing together this month is The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman.
Ackerman, an award-winning science writer, tours the globe to reveal what makes birds capable of such extraordinary feats of mental prowess. Birds are astonishingly intelligent creatures. According to revolutionary new research, some birds rival primates and even humans in their remarkable forms of intelligence. In The Genius of Birds, acclaimed author Jennifer Ackerman explores their newly discovered brilliance and how it came about. As she travels around the world to the most cutting-edge frontiers of research, Ackerman not only tells the story of the recently uncovered genius of birds but also delves deeply into the latest findings about the bird brain itself that are shifting our view of what it means to be intelligent. At once personal yet scientific, richly informative and beautifully written, The Genius of Birds celebrates the triumphs of these surprising and fiercely intelligent creatures. We can't wait to discuss her findings together and share all of our own bird stories. We welcome anyone to attend. We do things a little differently with our book club--even if you haven't finished the book or if you didn't like it, we still want you to come. The goal is to unite our community through a love a literature, not to scold anyone about their reading habits or preferences. So, come out to meet the Hatchet Coffee book club on Thursday, September 28th at 7:30pm. We'll be meeting at the Hatchet Coffee location on 200 Den Mac Rd in Boone. |
