"Prepare for a snow-frosted, blood-drenched fairy tale where the monsters steal your heart and love ends up being the nightmare.” (Roshani Chokshi)

Emily A. Duncan's debut novel set the publishing world abuzz and was an instant New York Times bestseller. The book continues to make waves and has won itself many die-hard fans. Duncan wrote Wicked Saints while in grad school at Kent State University, where she graduated with a Master's degree in Library Science. Now, she balances writing and working full-time as a youth services librarian.

Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy.

A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.

A prince in danger must decide who to trust.

A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.

Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light.

Content warning: this book contains graphic violence, blood, child abuse, and drinking.

For September, we decided on a debut novel, Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse. Rebecca is a Nebula, Hugo, and Sturgeon Award Finalist. She has written several short stories published in Apex Magazine and Uncanny Magazine, and is a contributor to several collected works including New Suns: Original Speculative Fiction by People of Color and Invisible 3: Essays and Poems on Representation in SF. Trail of Lightning is the first book in her The Sixth World series, followed by her newest release, Storm of Locusts. Trail of Lightning received the 2019 Locus Award for Best First Novel.

The story follows Maggie Hoskie, a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last best hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much more terrifying than anything she could imagine. Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel the rez, unraveling clues from ancient legends, trading favors with tricksters, and battling dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology. As Maggie discovers the truth behind the killings, she will have to confront her past if she wants to survive. Welcome to the Sixth World.
