Nights are cooling off on top of this mountain. Some of the trees are starting to change color and there's a chill to the morning air that is distinctly autumnal. For many, this is a bittersweet time. Summer is ending and fall is sneaking up on us, closer every day. Even though most will welcome the cooler temperatures, they'll also miss the freedom of summer--it's long sunny days that lend themselves to exploring our particular spot in this beautiful world. For me, it's the beginning of the countdown to my favorite season: winter. I'm well aware it's not a popular opinion but I can't help it. I crave the silence after freshly fallen snow. I pine for the smell of wood smoke on my clothes and in my hair. I want to snuggle up under six blankets and read my favorite novels--all the ones I didn't get to during my busy summer. I can't wait to be right square in the middle of my favorite season.
So, in anticipation for those glorious days, we're having a Summer Ends & Winter is Coming Sale! All non-book items will be 20% off and hardcover bestsellers will have their discount upped to 30% off this weekend only--September 9-September 11. If you're wondering what exactly we mean by "non-book items", don't worry, we've got ya covered. Non-book items include Frostbeard Studio candles, Out of Print Clothing, Journals, Game of Thrones merchandise, all bookmarks, and all items on the kid's activities shelf. We're giving the hardback bestsellers a steep discount because we're anticipating a crop of incredible new novels this fall and want to have plenty of space to share them with you! We hope you'll join us this weekend and *gasp* maybe even start your holiday shopping a little early this year. We even have gift cards now! We also want to remind you about two clubs that we offer at Foggy Pine Books. First is our book club. Our first meeting will be this month, September 24th at 7:30pm. The book we will be discussing is The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. We have copies available in the store for 15% off! The next five book picks are detailed on the book club section of this site. If you plan on attending the meeting, please RSVP so we bring enough refreshments. The second club is the ARC club. ARC stands for Advanced Reader's Copy. The bookstore receives lots of these each month, more than we can read. Rather than recycle them, we decided to offer them to the community! All we want in return is a review of the book you read! We'll post it on our website and pass it on to the publisher. We're excited to build a community review section of our website but even more excited to share these fun, new titles with our patrons. So, if you're interested, click the ARC club link and register! We'll get back to you within two days to offer you a choice between two or three books. After you choose, you can pick your book up at the bookstore anytime! Finally, we want to talk to you about something that is very near and dear to our hearts: Banned Books Week. This takes place every September (9/25 - 10/1/2016) and serves to focus the spotlight on books that are controversial to the point of being banned. As a company, and also on a personal level, Foggy Pine Books supports free speech and will always decry censorship. We believe that literature is a key learning platform and that you can never truly understand what you believe until you've had it challenged. Perhaps this comes in the form of a book that complicates your world view, challenges your notion of your place in this world, or your idea of what is right and wrong. You, as a human, have the right to explore these things, without having your resources ripped away from you. Self-discovery often comes at the realization that we are not alone in whatever particular mode of being is controversial today and that we've been taught to repress. We are fervent advocates for self-discovery and free expression of that discovery. To quote Evelyn Beatrice Hall, "I don't agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." To that end, we will have a fabulous Banned Books Week celebration later this month. Stay tuned for more information. If you aren't signed up for our newsletter, do it here. If you don't follow us on social media, click any of the icons in the top left of the site. Winter is coming.
