By Elly Murray  Novelist and comics writer Neil Gaiman has been on a roll for the past few years. American Gods, the 2017 television adaptation of his 2001 book, was praised for its visual style and was renewed for a third season to be released sometime in 2020. Good Omens, a hit 2019 interpretation of the book he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett way back in 1990, has also seen incredible success in the months since its debut. Now, Gaiman is working with Netflix to produce a television show based on The Sandman, one of the most influential comics he’s ever created. Gaiman released the first issue of The Sandman in 1988, under DC’s Vertigo imprint, and the series was soon a cult classic. The story mainly follows the misadventures of Dream of the Endless a.k.a. The Sandman, a powerful being who controls the Dreaming, the place we visit in our dreams. Dream is, as Gaiman describes him, “a gloomy sort of bugger” and throughout the comic he constantly struggles with the knowledge that everyone must change or die, and he will also have to make that choice. Written in Gaiman’s singularly unique style, The Sandman was one of the few comics to ever make the New York Times Bestsellers list, with Maus, Watchmen, and The Dark Knight Returns for company. It was also one of five graphic novels to make Entertainment Weekly's "100 Best Reads from 1983 to 2008," ranking at No. 46. For over two decades, fans of The Sandman have been hoping desperately that it will be reworked for the screen--any screen, really. There have been a few movie attempts, and the inklings of a television show as well, but nothing has really gotten off the ground. However, the new partnership with Netflix shows some real promise, especially in the wake of Gaiman’s latest successful TV adaptations. Netflix has also already produced Lucifer, a TV show based on a character from the original Sandman run. Gaiman is set to be executive-producer of the show, with co-writer David Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) as showrunner. He confirmed in a Twitter post that the first season will be eleven episodes, and will cover The Sandman’s first volume, Preludes and Nocturnes, and possibly part of the second volume, The Doll’s House. "I hope that it's gonna be about as faithful as Good Omens the TV series was to Good Omens the book,” Gaiman said in a CBC interview. “Which is to say, you do things that people loved in the comic on the TV because they loved that thing and why would you change it? But you also take advantage of what you can do on television and what you can do on the screen. There are a lot of Sandman fans, and they're waiting for the Sandman that they know and love to be on the screen, and that's what we want to give them." The Sandman TV show is still in the early stages of development, so there’s no release date or cast lined up as of yet. However, fans of Gaiman’s work (myself included!) will eagerly await the news. Speaking of book clubs and author events, we are excited to be hosting/co-hosting a ton of amazing events in February. First up is Story Slam at Noble Kava on Saturday, February 8th at 7pm. Come out and tell your true, 5 minute story on the theme "Moral Dilemma". Not ready to share your own story? Come listen and enjoy this welcoming and supportive community storytelling event. Foggy Pine Books also hosts a monthly open mic in partnership with Out of Your Mind, a local, non-profit mental health community. We'll be meeting on Feb. 10 at 5:30pm at the bookstore. This open mic provides a space for our local high school students (& extended community) to creatively express themselves and socialize with other artists. Our Fantasy/Sci-Fi Book Club will meet on the 27th @ 6:30pm to discuss Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Foggy Pine Book Club will meet on the 29th @ 7:30pm to talk about My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithewaite. We'll share wine & conversation as we discuss the books. These book clubs are open to anyone & we want to hear what you thought about the book, even if you didn't finish it. It motivated you to dive into this mess called life and do the right thing. We are so honored to be moving into this new year with passion and purpose alongside people like you. As you know, Foggy Pine Books is committed to providing opportunities for giving back, both in our local and global communities. If you've been staying abreast of the news, the fires in Australia are a countrywide catastrophe. Over 18 million acres of land have been burned and half a billion animals are injured, displaced, or deceased. When faced with such widespread destruction, it is hard to determine how we can be helpful, especially from so far away. But every little bit helps and that is why all proceeds of your purchase of a book from our environmental display will be donated to benefit WIRES and The New South Wales Rural Fire Service. Together, we can make a difference for the global community.
We all know that lasting change begins with ourselves. One of the best ways to effect change is to experience new things so we can look at our situation with fresh perspective. Luckily for us book worms, reading can aid us in that pursuit! It's truly amazing that just by sitting down with a good book, we can improve our capacity to understand other individuals and social situations. If he's not at the store, he's either snuggled up on the couch with his partner and dog, or outside rock climbing. Just one more piece of new business: holiday hours. We will maintain our normal hours (Mon-Thur 11am - 7pm; Fri 11am - 9pm; Sat 12pm - 9pm; and Sun 12pm - 6pm) through December 23. On December 24th we will be open from 10am - 3pm and we will be closed Christmas Day. We will resume normal business hours until New Years Day 2020, when we will be closed again. As you know, September 22nd-28th is host to one of our favorite events, Banned Book Week. We will continue our annual tradition of hosting a Banned Books Reading on Friday, September 27th at 6 pm. We use this time to come together as a community to protest banning books by reading from them, out loud, together. Sign up to read from your favorite banned book, come out to the reading, and browse our banned books display. If you read during the event, we’ll give you a free ARC! We’re also offering 15% off all books on the banned book display during Banned Books Week.
